Ciarán O’Connell

Ciarán O’Connell is an Accordion, Melodeon player and an Uilleann piper from County Limerick and is currently studying the BA in Irish Music in the University of Limerick. He started playing music in school and was driven to music through his grandfather. Having had many teachers in the past, from Vinny Murphy and Derrick Hickey on accordion, to Mikie Smyth and Blackie O’Connell on pipes, he has a wide range of influences and perspectives in music. Joining the Castleconnell, Ahane, Herbertstown Comhaltas branch under the tutelage of Sheila Cagney, he has competed in the Fleadh Cheoil for many years and was part of a Grúpa Cheoil that won the All-Ireland in 2018. As part of the Meitheal Summer school in 2019, he received a bursary to study in the University of Limerick for a week, of where he is now studying full time. In 2021, he received the Mícheál Ó hEidhin Award, after achieving Distinction in his Grade 8 SCT exam. In recent times, Ciarán is the youth officer for Limerick Comhaltas, he has joined the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland and is teaching regularly with Music Generation and Na Píobairí Uilleann.

Sonny Cahill

Sonny Cahill is an 18 year old musician hailing from Co. Carlow. He plays flute whistle and concertina. He was tutored by Ciaran Somers, Kevin Crawford, Michael Mcgoldrick and Tim Doyle. In recent years Sonny has played many prestigious gigs such as playing for Joe Bidens banquet in Dublin Castle and at the Sitges Live festival in Spain. He is also teaching his own private lessons weekly for students of any age. Sonny has also had great success in Fleadhs over recent years. He is now going into his second year of the BA in Irish Music and Dance where he is under the tutoring of Dr Niall Keegan.

Katie Sands

Katie Sands is a North Antrim fiddle player, harpist and Gaeilgeoir born and bred in Ballycastle. With her parents Micheal and Catherine being experienced musicians themselves alongside the rest of the family, and having been taught by Johnny Murphy, Katie has had many a wonderful opportunity to play across Ireland, and all over the world. Herself and family have played together in the Turning Wave Festival in Gundagai, Australia, as well as at the iBAM Celebration in Chicago and most recently for her father’s book-launch during BelfastTrad fest. 2022 saw Katie teaching English with NGO Reach in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a year, though not without her fiddle! From there she applied to the Irish World Academy, and now studies the BA in Irish Music in Limerick. When at home up North again, Katie is a teacher with Comhaltas Baile an Chaistil, without whom’s support and teachings wouldn’t have qualified for the All Ireland Solo harp and trio competitions when younger. Katie will continue her studies at the Irish World Academy under the tutelage of Siobhan Peoples and many other brilliant tutors alike, alongside her fellow students.

Jamie Troy

Jamie Troy is a guitar and bodhran player from County Laois. He started bodhran at the age of twelve under the tutelage of All Ireland winner Dale McKay. Jamie was a member of the Music Generation Laois Trad Orchestra for a number of years, in which he performed various suites of music including Martin Tourish’s ‘The Impossible Dream’. With the Laois Trad Orchestra, Jamie performed in The National Concert Hall, Collins Barracks on St. Patrick’s Day, and at Breizh Pan Celtic Festival in France. Jamie is currently studying the BA in Irish Music in the University of Limerick under the tutelage of guitarist Conal O’ Kane. Jamie was invited to teach Bodhran to music students from the University of Michigan this Summer at the University of Limerick. Jamie has played at the Forest Fest in 2022 and 2023 and looks forward to playing again in 2024.
